Martyn was a total pro and pure gentleman to work with, especially after a long day spent shooting other aspects of the campaign, before I got to shoot him on green screen. His Wikipedia profile describes him as a “legend of mountain biking” and it seems that this man can pretty much do anything with a bike.

“Time lapse” video is produced by using hundreds of still photographs to show something that happens over a long period of time, condensed into a short video clip. This particular clip was shot over two days showing the work in progress and finished branding as it now appears in store.

The concept by art director Rob McDonnell of Trilby Design, involved photographing tightly wrapped products from each of the stores, under the title “Surprise”. The inside covers show the items revealed in the same position. As well as appearing on the brochures (1.5 million of which were printed), the images also appeared online and on television.

As most of the zebra crossings in Dublin have now disappeared, we had to make our own one for the shoot using white vinyl strips. Then we needed a street that looked similar to the original with not much traffic passing through it, difficult to find in Dublin these days! Thankfully Shrewsbury Road in Ballsbridge provided the almost perfect backdrop. With a little autumn sunshine and a big thanks to PD for providing the white VW Beetle, we got pretty close to the original iconic shot.

I’m currently exhibiting two prints as part of the Select Photo Fair at the Print Space Gallery, in Hoxton, London. The images showcase some of my “hair” photography, which I specialise in. These images were shot over two separate sessions with award winning stylist Mary Kennedy, for the MOHH group of hair salons in Ireland.

This is a beautiful office space designed to enrich the creativity of those who work there. I know I’d certainly like to work here! Enjoy a selection of images.

I had been obsessing about doing a shoot with the Ferrari 308 after my buddy John Talbot took me for a spin in his newly acquired prize possession last year, this car was made to be in a fashion shoot! We shot on location in Connemara in Galway, moving the creative team at short notice from Dublin. Despite the Ferrari breaking down on us, the mixed Irish summer weather and getting bitten by midgets, a beautiful selection of images was produced. Please see credits below.

The use of moving image is certainly not a new idea but something that will likely become much more common for selling and marketing models in the future. As photographers have traditionally shot model’s portfolios as stills, the introduction of the Canon 5D Mark 2 (and other DSLRs with HD video capabilities) has revolutionised the way photographers now think and what they produce. Conversations with fellow photographers around Dublin usually leads to one or other saying “I’m trying my hand with a bit of video lately on the DSLR”. With the technology so accessible, it seems easier to do so.

With the increased use of smart phones, it’s just so easy to watch video now, with a half decent 3G connection. It sort of cracks me up that I can watch a video I made on my digital camera, on my iPhone. Ten years ago, that would have been regarded as nearly the stuff of science fiction. But it makes sense to me to see a model’s portfolio “moving” rather than “still”, we get more of a sense of the person, how they move and their expressions.

So will all photographers become directors of some description in the future? And will all model portfolios be moving rather than still in the future? I guess I’ll have to call myself a “visual artist” from now on. Interesting times…..
